When I chose to leave my job as an analyst at a hedge fund

Moving from Electrical Engineering, to High Finance, and onto Software Development — a faux pas?

I was a mere 21 years old when I finished my B.Sc. in Italy, and 23 when I wrapped up my Master’s. For some — I found out with time — that is hardly early for a student to enter the workforce. In Italy, however, it is largely precocious: AlmaLaurea shows average graduation age is ~26 years old. The reason why, for those that are curious, may be the subject for some other blog post.

Average graduation age

My first real employment after university was in high finance, more specifically in London’s buy-side files, as odd as that may seem. Broadly speaking, the classic roadmap for those seeking a career in investment management is a ~2y stint in investment banking at a bulge bracket or boutique bank, to then leave the sell-side for the appealing roles in PE, VC, and HF.

Evidently, my experience was an exception to the norm — my profile landed on the recruiters’ desk through a business school in Turin, which had selected me for a graduate program in Business & Administration. I wound up having to turn down this additional chapter for my education, given it would have significantly weighed on my finances and I had no money to my name after college. However, exposure to the school’s network of companies allowed my profile to gather some positive attention, including that of Gartner and Exor — ultimately, that is how I landed with a FT role as an analyst (junior, de facto) at an internal hedge fund which is now the team at Lingotto Intersection.
